Neptune's staircase is probably one of the most amazing engineering feats along the canal - it is a ladder of eight locks that raises the canal about 25m above sea level over a distance of less than 500m. The steep climb was challenging for the portage system but we rewarded ourselves with snacks and then El and James were off again for an easy paddle to Gairlochy.
